Butterscotch

Go ahead. Google “Butterscotch”. Or search for it on Wikipedia. You might find one entry for the MySpace page of a young girl from Sacramento, California, Antoinette “Butterscotch” Clinton. Her MySpace page says she is an internationally recognized beatbox artist and that may be so, but a web search brings only one or two hits for her name. That is surely soon to change. A bright star on America’s Got Talent is Butterscotch.

A classical-piano major at California State University-Sacramento, the 21-year-old Clinton hopes to teach beatboxing and see it offered as a university major. A winner at the 2005 Hip Hop World Challenge, she now works with Verizon’s new online beatbox mixer (www.beatboxmixer.com).

“One of my biggest idols growing up was Michael Jordan,'’ says Clinton, whose love for basketball almost matches her love for music. “I always wanted to be in the NBA, the first girl in the NBA. Then they made the WNBA.'’ Clinton says that angered her at first because it meant that she would not be allowed in the NBA, but she later felt the WNBA allowed women to be empowered. (source)

It will be fun watch this summertime hit and see how well she does. So far, she’s managed to add to each performance. She’s got something special and I think she made a wise decision to showcase her talents on this show.

Update:

Public Radio interview back in 2005 and replayed on 7-13-07

June 2007 comment by Chris Macias, Sacramento Bee’s pop music critic, at his blog, BeatNonStop.  Seems he’s known about her talents for a while:

I also got a copy of The Local Slice, a ‘zine published by KSSU radio. And look at this: the cover story was on Antoinette “Butterscotch” Clinton, a world champion beat-boxer who I profiled in 2005. All of that music making with her mouth has evidently led to an increasingly rising career. Lately she’s been part of Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom project, which on record features Norah Jones, Bebel Gilberto and members of Massive Attack. She even joined Peeping Tom on stage at the recent Coachella festival. Butterscotch has also been collaborating with indie hip-hop favorite Pigeon John and was booked on the Tom Green Live. You go, Butterscotch!

Jeffrey Wins!

I am so happy and surprised that Jeffrey Sebelia won this season’s Project Runway. I never intended to start watching the show, but my daughter and my mother drew me in. Like most reality TV shows, it wasn’t just about the clothes but about people’s lives. I wasn’t hooked on the show until I saw the episode about the designers’ home lives. Up until that point, I was offended by Jeffrey’s outward appearance. As I watched him at home with his wife and young son, I was heavily convicted of my inaccurate judgement of him.

To be fair, when you dress and tatoo yourself like Jeffrey you MUST be aware that people will inaccurately judge you as a scary person. I felt guilty when I heard his story of a rough childhood and overcoming drug abuse.  I was floored when I realized that the tatoo around Jeffrey’s neck, written in script letters, was about his son, Harrison.  I hate tatoos, but even I find it hard to criticize an ode to one’s son written in script around one’s neck.

However, I quickly became a Jeffrey fan, my affection for him second only to Laura Bennett who surely wins a Super Mom designer award. How she designs and creates such beautiful clothing with 5 children (and pregnant with her 6th) is legendary stuff for a mother!

Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty is a good show!  Watch it!  The only problem I have with the show is the very purposeful implications that her young nephew has huge gender identity issue (age 10 and sits in the house all day watching fashion television and secretly read fashion magazine - come on). There are also implications of premarital sex and very tame underwear shots.  Therefore, it is not a good show for kids under the teenage years.

I think the reason to watch it is America Ferrara.  She did a great job of portraying a smart, honest and kind young woman who really has no idea that others find her so unattractive.  I also have to compliment the writers of the show for walking a fine line between making fun of less attractive people and showing them in a very positive light.  I have hope that Ms. Ferrara and the writers of the show will continue to develop her character in a positive way.

Captain Picard’s online journal

I DEFY anyone to find a funnier blog (sorry Scottius Maximus, Timman, you’ve been beaten this time) than…

Captain Picard’s Journal

Go ahead and try to name one. It is simply impossible. My favorite entry so far is, “Whatever Happened to Dr. Pulaski?”

Or 20 Random Facts.

I am supposed to write 20 random facts about myself and tag the same amount of people that it takes minutes to complete it. Don’t worry, this won’t happen!

1: I have to have Earl Grey tea before I can start a staff meeting.

2: I have a artificial heart; Riker asked me the other day if it ever get rusty.

3: After being told by Deanna Troi that if she ever marries Will, there would have to be a nude ceremony on Betazed in which all attendees are unclothed, I had a stress pill. Read on…

I do have one complaint in that I cannot search his blog to see if he’s written on my favorite episode, Darmok.

This guy should win some kind of award. I wish I had thought of this. It’s giving me big ideas. What about the blog of …well, I can’t think of anyone who’s not dead yet. Ok, a made up person…hmm, this is harder than I thought. I’ll be thinking about it tonight when I’m supposed to be concentrating on Dr. Dennis Marzolf’s lecture at our church on worship.
