Thoughts on Obama and McCain

Last night on the news, a local reporter was camped in front of the Pawlenty’s suburban home in hopes, I think, of seeing signs of the Secret Service or some other indication that Pawlenty would be McCain’s pick. Instead, neighbor kids (who were up late because school hasn’t started here yet) walked their dog back and forth, back and forth, behind the reporter, giggling and smiling at the camera. I’d be willing to bet they were about 11 or 12. I know that mischievous age well! Anyway, local speculation continues this morning.
I listened to Barack Obama’s acceptance speech last night. Here and there, the speech was interesting; my husband is a teacher and he promised him a pay raise. Cool! And how could I not vote for a Christian man who proclaims : “Let us keep that promise - that American promise - and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess”. That hope is that we will no longer be judged by our sins because we are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. He is referring to Hebrews 10:23, which in context says:

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Such an excellent scripture reference, unless….do you think…he was misapplying scripture to suit his own purposes?  Would someone as distinguished as Barack Obama really do that?  Naw…

I can listen again!

I just heard great news!  Now that Mitt Romney has given up his presidential campaign, Hugh Hewitt will give up being Romney’s #1 cheerleader.  I honestly stopped listening to his show a few months back because he talked non-stop and one-sidedly for Mr. Romney.  I’ll give him a listen again soon.

Ask the candidates

Margery Punnett proposes a new and more in-depth line of questioning for the Democratic candidates at the next debate.

  • Have you ever been laughed at? Bullied?
  • Do you remember the bully’s name? What would you say to him or her now?
  • What scares you?
  • Are you jealous of any of your siblings?
  • What did your parents expect of you?
  • What were you in your family? The star? The clown? The screw-up?
  • Read on…

She asks for input on other questions.  I think that asking these question wouldn’t get at what I want to know.  For me it boils down to a person’s view of government’s role and how people should be taxed.  How to get at that one without having to listen to a lot of bs?  Hmm…

Friends of Franken…

Saint Paul, contributor to one of my favorite blogs, Fraters Libertas, gets kudos for digging deeper as he provides a list of contributors to Minnesota native, Al Franken’s, campaign.  He writes:

And, finally, the most painful discovery of all.

Ben Stein - $1,000. Legendary Ferris Beuhler actor, game show host, and brilliant conservative. Former speech writer for Richard Nixon and columnist for the American Spectator and Yahoo Finance, among other outlets. One of the finest writers around on politics, economics, and culture, as demonstrated in this listing. In particular, he’s one the most articulate and persuasive speakers advocating the pro-life stance in the country.

And he’s giving money to Al Bleeping Franken? A guy who’s never found a liberal position on abortion he didn’t like (as shown by the $5,000 contribution he also received from something called Washington Women for Choice.) How in the world can Ben Stein be supporting Al Franken?

Rather than engage in rank speculation, I have chosen to utilize the most powerful tool in the Internet journalist arsenal, the email interview. And believe it or not, Stein wrote me back. The disturbing transcript follows:

Barack Obama talks to college students about being wasted…

You know…I’ve spent more than a few moments this past year wondering how in the world I would get myself pumped back up to cover the upcoming presidential race. No more! Thanks to Barack Obama I now have full confidence in my ability to opine on comments like this one made at Iowa State University last weekend:

We ended up launching a war that should have never been authorized, and should have never been waged, and to which we now have spent $400 billion, and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted. ~Barack Obama

Now to be fair, let’s see what he had to say afterward when called on by the press to explain his comments.

Obama, in an interview with the Des Moines Register right afterward, told the paper, ‘’I was actually upset with myself when I said that, because I never use that term,'’ he said. ‘’Their sacrifices are never wasted. . . . What I meant to say was those sacrifices have not been honored by the same attention to strategy, diplomacy and honesty on the part of civilian leadership that would give them a clear mission.”

There! That made things perfectly clear. Can’t wait to hear four years of explanations like that! And to think that liberals like to accuse President Bush of being incoherent. Watch the original speech on YouTube.
