Kirby Puckett - after the game

In this photo of a picture taken Jan. 13, 2006, Puckett is in Arizona with his puppy, Payton, named after Puckett’s hero, Chicago Bears great Walter Payton. Both Payton and Puckett wore No. 34.

The StarTribune has posted the first of a four-part series on Kirby Puckett’s life after he was forced to retire from baseball. The first post is very good. I hope the rest will be.

Kirby, Kirby, Kirby, Kirby, Kirby

My puppy, Kirby the great black beast, thought it was interesting that an entire locker room of Minnesota Twins baseball players was chanting his name over and over again television at about 5pm today.

A storybook ending to a less than perfect season and a storybook beginning to the playoffs! The Twins will enter the playoffs with the AL Batting Champion on their team. Joe Mauer won the title today, beating Derek Jeter. Mauer is the first American League catcher to win a batting title.

Go Twins!

Justin Morneau congratulates Torii Hunter during today’s game.

TWINS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!

Boof Bonser held the Royals to one run in 6 2/3 innings, and Torii Hunter’s two-run homer combined with Justin Morneau’s three-run blast helped the Twins clinch a spot in the playoffs. Minnesota now trails Detroit by one game for the AL Central lead. Read more...
I tell ya, Kirby is a good luck charm!

In memory…

Kirby Puckett has died. Saint and sinner, he was, perhaps, the most popular player in franchise history. To the fans joy, Kirby Puckett played his entire career with the Twins (1984-95) and led them to two World Series titles. My husband and I were able to attend one of the 1987 World Series games, but could attend the 1991 series because I was very pregnant with the boy featured in this photograph. Erik, our son, was born the year the Minnesota Twins won their second World Series. At the hospital, newborn Erik was given a Homer Hanky (if you have to ask ,then you don’t live ’round here) and a Twins ornament. How fitting it is that our son loves baseball and happens to be pretty good at it, too.

Kirby used to live not far from us. Once in a while we’d see him drive by us on one of the major side roads. His daughter and my daughter went to the same preschool, although not in the same class. Kirby donated tickets and other memorbilia to the preschool on a regular basis. His name was gold in this community for a long time; even the trial didn’t seem to tarnish his star irreparably.

In 2004, we traveled to Cooperstown and stopped at Kirby’s plaque. That is where we took this photo. Please pray for Kirby’s children..
