The following people are up for the Katie’s Beer Spam Award for July. Vote for your favorite candidate below. I try to scan the spam once in a great while just in case someone’s message gets put in there. I am intrigued by the wording of some of the spam and really wonder if a human or a computer is generating the text. I suppose I should spend my time wondering about more important things, but I find this stuff pretty funny. Did you know that, with some spam emails, if you do a search for some of the text (the part you can see without clicking on the email), you usually can find that the phrases have been lifted from a work of literature in another country. I find that interesting.

If you click on the link above, you will see that this particular spam text was lifted from the online work of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, Russian science fiction writers. Perhaps the spammer is following directions or cutting and pasting from someone else, but perhaps the spammer is a would-be scholar. A poetic, but unlikely scenario.

Steely Dan and the Wilson brothers

I’m contemplating this letter and trying to figure out if Steely Dan is actually mad at the Wilsons, goofing around (check out their word use), seeking publicity or just wants a jam session with Luke and Owen Wilson. I’m confused, but I did find some interesting photos of Steely Dan, then and now and the Wilson brothers, then and now. I like how the Wilson brothers have played up their familial relationship and share a website…or maybe they are just economizing?

Red Buttons in Sayonara

Red Buttons in Sayonara.jpg
James Garner as Captain Mike Bailey, Marlon Brando as Maj. Lloyd “Ace” Gruver,
Red Buttons as Airman Joe Kelly and Eddie’s nanny, aka Miyoshi Umeki as Katsumi Kelly

One of my favorite actors, Red Buttons, died recently. Although most people my age remember his role in the doomed ship (and movie), the Poseidon Adventure, I remember him for his role in Sayonara.

Sayonara is one of those movies you catch part of on a rainy afternoon and wonder how it is that you’ve never heard of it before. I have the VHS version and I see that is also on DVD now. I read the book by James Michener, but found it very racist and depressing. Paul Osborn did a nice job of translating the basic beauty of the story to the screen without the racist and overly-depressing elements of the book. Read Red Buttons obituary here.

On a side note, Marlo Brandon was a fat old man to me until I saw the movie. What a handsome and interesting character he was! I never knew that about him until I watched him in Sayonara. He played his role as Maj. Lloyd “Ace” Gruver beautifully.

Dark rainy morning in Minnetonka

An attempt at photo posting by email. I took the photos with my cell phone camera and emailed it to myself and then to my blog.  It’s a two-step process to safeguard against chimps posting to my blog.  ;)   I took the photos because it was usually dark at 9am this morning.  The first photo I took while driving, albeit not very fast.  The second photo was at a stoplight by the Carlson towers.  I love how the red truck and the red lights really show up and provide a focal point for the second photo.

Kirby of Minnehaha Creek

It’s hot today, again. Kirby went for a swim in the creek for the first time. Very exciting for him and for me.

Posting by email

Glen, of Territorial Bloggings , my wonderful and personal tech-guy little brother and Lutheran blogger extraordinaire, has helped me install posting by email. I am very happy! Should make quick posting easier during the day or on vacation. How cool!

Kirby is a graduate!

Kirby, our 4 month old Black Lab, graduated from level one obedience class last night. He received a certificate with his name misspelled (Kriby), a dog biscuit and a five dollar coupon for the next level. (The instructor noticed the misspelling as she was presenting it to us and promised a new one.)
Afterward, we celebrated with an ice cream cone. (Yes, I let “Kriby” share my ice cream cone.) A man sitting nearby at Dairy Queen asked me TWICE how much money I would take for my dog. I told him that although he had been a “free” dog, he was now priceless. Although his comments look creepy on paper, he seemed like a nice man. He was a well-dressed silver-haired man and with a nice lady companion. He drove away in a beautiful silver luxury convertible.

Wednesday Quiz

Theology Geek asks:

“Now this may seem like a silly question to some, but I want an honest answer. Please don’t tell me… it’s in the bible. I know good and well what it says there. I want to hear opinions. What makes a man and what makes a woman. By society’s standards and also your own. Believe it or not, there is a method to my madness… more to come soon.”

My response to him: Sticks versus feelings

A man’s thinking revolves around sticks and a woman’s around feelings (not exclusively her own, but also those around her). I’ve added two photos as a basic illustration. The first photo shows a female soldier accepting flowers from an Iraqi man. She points her weapon down and smiles at him. She is very aware that her actions might offend the man; she is aware of feelings all around her, even though she is a capable soldier. The second photo show a male soldier receiving flowers from a boy. He never adjusts his weapon and does not appear to be concerned about what the boy might think of his weapon pointing at him. Why is he not concerned? Because the boy is a boy and the male soldier assumes that even Iraqi boys are not overly concerned about offending others’ feelings by actions. Both these soldiers, male and female, accept the gift graciously despite their different methods. Is mine an expert analysis? Nope. Just my own.

Do you have a good answer for Jason? Leave it at his blog. I’ll report on his findings as he posts.
