Headed to the Frozen Final Four…again!!!

The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team advanced to the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Cornell in the championship game of the 2005 NCAA West Regional today at Mariucci Arena. Senior forward Barry Tallackson scored the game-winning goal at 4:31 of the extra session to push the top-seeded Golden Gophers (28-14-1) to their third NCAA Frozen Four in four years.

My son was lucky enough to attend both Gopher games this weekend at Mariucci Arena with his grandpa (my dad). My dad, a former Gopher hockey star (1957-1960), never played in an arena like Mariucci with the thousands of thunderous fans, but I think the passion of the game was the same for the players and the smaller crowds. In his day, college and semi-pro hockey was the only ticket in town. To this day, people his age still remember him and I find that an amazing testimony to a simpler time when college sports really ruled in this town.
