My favorite radio programs

I was so impressed by Love and Blunder’s radio station that I decided to add my own. OK, I’m shamelessly linking to an existing radio station, but you’d still be listening to what I’m listening to. Actually, FM 107.1 is only one of my favorite radio stations. I also listen to AM1280 The Patriot, which can be heard livestream 24/7!

My kids have no choice in the morning program; they are hopelessly stuck listening to A Balanced Breakfast with Ian and Margery Punnett. I usually can’t make it up to listen at 5am, but that is my goal. (Update: I’ve written before about this husband and wife radio team; you can watch a video of their work at the Hallmark Channel’s New Morning show website, click on past shows and select 12-9-04. ) I frequently call or write in, sometimes with the same posts from my blog. My son’s voice is even in one of the current promos featuring listeners imitating Napolean Dynomite. He thinks that’s pretty cool and so do I! Other shows I like are The Kevyn Burger show and the Lori and Julia Show. Weekends, be sure to listen to Katie K9 and Chowhounds.
AM1280 The Patriot is another favorite of mine. For the best in local Minnesota politics, be sure to read the blog and/or listen to radio show of the Northern Alliance. Listen live Saturdays from noon-3PM Central Time. The radio show is also replayed Monday-Friday, Noon, 6PM, Midnight, 6AM. The live streaming is paid for by the Taxpayers League of Minnesota who also has a great blog and radio show! Of course, I always try to catch Hugh Hewitt. You can listen to him livestreamed on The Patriot. He has a good blog, as does his producer, Radioblogger. Other good shows are Laura Ingraham and Bill Bennett, but I don’t get a chance to listen to those. I’m not done with this post or my links, so check back later. Enough blogging for this mom today.

Fed Up With Blogger

Is anyone else fed up with Blogger? Do I have options? The only way I can post, this entire day, is to use Hello and tag my post to a photo or add comments to my existing posts. I’ve tried MSN Explorer and Internet Explorer with the same results all day long. Posted by Hello

Me and Jesse Jackson - a very strange alliance

“I feel so passionate about this injustice being done, how unnecessary it is to deny her a feeding tube, water, not even ice to be used for her parched lips,” said Jackson, who has run for president as a Democrat. “This is a moral issue and it transcends politics and family disputes.”

I certainly never expected to be appreciating one of Jesse Jackson’s diplomatic efforts, but I do this time.

Mikalah Gordon

I know…I’m one of the few who liked Mikalah Gordon. Maybe because I’m the mom of an exuberant teenaged daughter. I’m still predicting that the outster from American Idol will only help her. She will be a viable star. I just have a gut instinct on it. Of course, her future as a star is in her own hands and in the hands of her parents and those they choose to guide her.

Mikalah says:

“America really just saw me as this crazy, wild 17-year-old and so I just wanted to show that even though I love to have fun and I’ll be the life of the party and if you’re sad, I’ll make you so happy, but that when it comes to singing, I really am serious about it and this is my career,” she says. “Some people want to be doctors. Some people want to be lawyers. I want to be famous.”

Headed to the Frozen Final Four…again!!!

The University of Minnesota men’s hockey team advanced to the 2005 NCAA Frozen Four with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Cornell in the championship game of the 2005 NCAA West Regional today at Mariucci Arena. Senior forward Barry Tallackson scored the game-winning goal at 4:31 of the extra session to push the top-seeded Golden Gophers (28-14-1) to their third NCAA Frozen Four in four years.

My son was lucky enough to attend both Gopher games this weekend at Mariucci Arena with his grandpa (my dad). My dad, a former Gopher hockey star (1957-1960), never played in an arena like Mariucci with the thousands of thunderous fans, but I think the passion of the game was the same for the players and the smaller crowds. In his day, college and semi-pro hockey was the only ticket in town. To this day, people his age still remember him and I find that an amazing testimony to a simpler time when college sports really ruled in this town.

Girlfriends

I have no girlfriends. I have come to this conclusion today. I am not depressed or lamenting my life. I’m just facing a fact and deciding whether or not I need to take steps to develop some closer girl friendships.

I have a husband who is my best friend, to a depth not expressable with words or actions. The joy and satisfaction of my husband’s friendship has probably kept me from needing many girlfriends, yet there are times when I wish I had a few. I know many, many people and am friendly with them. I have baseball girlfriends, hockey girlfriends, football girlfriends, kids’ schools girlfriends, church girlfriends…and now several, very fun and cool, yet sort-of anonymous blogger girlfriends. I also have many male friends, but they can’t qualify as girlfriends for obvious reasons.

My friendship life has consisted of:

Maria - my best friend from my age 9 to 15. We lost touch as we became adults and became very, very different from each other.

Annette - my best friend from age 15 to 18. We lost touch nearly immediately after high school.

Lori and Christine - my best friends in college (my second attempt at college). We still keep in touch, but live far apart from each other.

Rob - my husband and best friend for the past 21 1/2 years.

I have never been one of those girls that has tons of friends. I envied them, but knew I wasn’t like that. I am not a loner, I love being around other people. I just like to keep a tight circle. I can be shy, although I am also totally comfortable speaking to an audience. I can be quite sensitive and introspective, but age has given wisdom to put things into a healthy life perspective.

Through it all, my mother and sister, and now my daughter, have been very much like best friends, too. However, mothers, daughters and sisters cannot be truly best friends because the familial relationship sometimes supercedes the friendship and sometimes causes friction. You can WANT to be best friends with your sister, for example, but there are times that the sister relationship comes into play and she can only view you as a sister.

I think the reason I don’t have any close girlfriends is because, first of all, I am very close to my husband and children. I have seen women who put friends before their families with disasterous effects. I do believe that husband and wife can meet each others emotional needs, if they fully put their trust in each other as God-given spouses. Still, I want girlfriends to call up for a movie, or a dinner out or shopping. Rob has some buddies that he gets together with once a month (or less) for a basketball game or beer or fishing.

I know there are other reasons I don’t have close girlfriends, but this is a blog and not my personal diary. I do know that it mostly has to do with shyness and fear of rejection, the busyness of raising a family and my odd interests (I know of few women locally that interested in religion and politics as I am). I hope that age brings me the wisdom to put those fears into a healthier perspective. This post has ending up sounding like a new year’s resolution, but maybe that is fitting for the new life of our Easter celebration.

8:39pm Post note: I’ve edited my post, in consideration of Devona’s observations.

Jesus is Risen! Rejoice! Be very glad! God is holy, yet loves us and desires us in heaven. We were separated from Him in the Garden of Eden. We are stuck in our sinful condition, living our days on a sinful earth. Yet God still loves us. He, in His great love and grace, provided the way of reconcilliation by sending His Son to suffer for our sins and die in our place. This is the good news! We are saved from our sins and can now live in eternity. Let your heart rejoice in this good news and cling every day to your loving Savior who came to bring you home with Him. He also desires for you to live in peace and love while remaining in our fallen home. Read God’s words to you in the Bible. He has provided all that we need to know to live lovingly with each other here on earth and to prepare us for eternal life.  Posted by Hello

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him,[a] “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”‘
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

American Idol predictions for 3/24

I’ve finally started liking this show. My two teens have always liked it, but I think my interest in the show was fueled by sane grown adults blogging about American Idol. Glen Piper and Terrie Rosas are two of my favorite bloggers and American Idol commentators.

On to the predictions:

Piper says: So, I think the bottom 3 will consist of Mikalah, Anthony, and Vonzell (It could also be Jessica, though based on performance it should be Nadia or Anwar).

No performer-specific predictions from Terrie; she makes even bigger predictions:

“Of course, winning is still the raison d’etre and I foresee more winners this season than any before, including music producers, agents and lawyers. I expect AI4 to generate a record number of recording contracts for the top 12 plus its most famous exile, Mario Vazquez. Obviously, a career is a different matter, but I think there are more than a few contenders among the remaining eleven.”

I say:

Anthony Federov - I’m feeling very guilty for not appreciating my fellow Ukrainian.

Carrie Underwood - Wow! She has to be among the few to be able to nail that tune, although I hated to hear someone other than Heart sing it.

Scott Savol - The throwing the glasses bit was very artificial. I hope it wasn’t his own idea.

Bo Bice - I loved Jim Croce!!! He won my heart wtih that song and did an excellent job singing it. Cut your hair!!!

Nikko Smith - Not catching his act…average singer with good stage presence.

Vonzell Solomon - Beautful and an average singer.

Constantine Maroulis - I loved the way he sang that song. I do think he was doing a parody of David Cassidy in a very good way.

Nadia Turner - From the very first moment I saw her, I knew she would be the next American Idol. Will I be right? She needs to pick out songs that can work with her low voice.

Mikalah Gordon - From the very first moment I saw her, I knew she wouldn’t be the next American Idol…but I knew she would one day be a star. The next Bette Midler, the next Babs…she’ll be something and having the last laugh. What a fantastic talent! I love her!

Anwar Robinson - I have always thought that he was probably the best bet for the male top performer.

Jessica Sierra - Excellent voice. No stage presence. Goof choice of song.

There! I finished just in time to watch Thursday night’s episode.

Update

I knew the Mikalah would be canned. Her talent is not for this competition. I am guessing that she has already fielded many, many offers. May her parents choose wisely to maximize her opportunities, while allowing her to have her teen years without ending up like Lindsey Lohan.

A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you love one another. –John 13:34 NKJV

Today is Maundy Thursday, the beginning of the liturgical commemoration of our Lord’s Passion.

Most of us who have grown up in the Lutheran tradition associate this day most of all with the institution of the Lord’s Supper, and Christ’s gift of His very body and blood in, with, and under simple bread and wine as His personal assurance to each of us, individually, that our sins are forgiven; as a way to live in us, so that we might live in Him. Lovers do not encounter each other so intimately as our Lord encounters the least sanctified of those who belong to Him in this Sacrament. He actually becomes part of us, and incorporates us anew into Himself. Through His sacramental body and blood, Christ nourishes and sustains His body, the Church.

But this day actually takes its name from the passage above, John 13:34. “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandamus, meaning “commandment.” In the next few days, Christians will assemble to hear once again the story of the greatest love of all: Christ’s love for the human race, that led Him to the cross that whoever believes in Him should live forever (John 3:16).
