Oprah: Love her or hate her?
I’ve discovered a new blog, Stand in the Trenches, by Mary-Eileen Swart. I found her blog through Terrie’s blog, Everyone is Entitled to My Opinions. Her byline caught my eye: Exercising my right to free speech in a blog, instead of emailing rants to my friends and family. That is one reason why I started blogging, too!
Mary-Eileen’s recent post on Oprah caught my eye because I had been trying to formulate a post on Oprah myself. Recently, my work schedule changed and I’m home preparing dinner at 4pm each day. That is Oprah hour in my television market and I have started to watch it once again. I’m hooked on her Favorite Things shows, where she gives away great items to screaming and appreciative audience members. So, I find myself tuning in at 4pm each day. This is difficult for me, however, because I’ve spent the past ten years telling everyone that I DETEST Oprah. This was mostly because after watching her show for the first ten years (1984 to 1994), I got tired of her pseudoreligious teachings and turned her off. Ok, I also turned her off because I was a mom of toddlers and young kids and had no business watching that in front of them. Beside, Barney was on at that time.
Now I am a hypocrite. I watch Oprah…right in front of my kids even. Oprah has really mellowed, I tell myself. She seems more down-to-earth, despite being one of the richest women in the world. Oh, who am I kidding myself…I watch because she is giving away hordes of cool items. It’s the same reason I watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Why do I like to watch a show that gives things away to people??? I guess it’s like candy for the eyes?
Read Mary-Eileen’s post on Oprah. You’ll see my comments in there, too!
