Help me!!! I want to be Martin Luther!

Following the lead of Confessing Evangelical’s blog, I took the What Theologian Are You? quiz.  The first time I took it, I was John Wesley (horrors!) and the second time I took it I was Augustine.  I’ve heard of Augustine, but couldn’t tell anyone about his beliefs.  Besides, I don’t think it describes me anyway.   What am I doing wrong here?  Everyone knows I’m Swansmith’s and Timman’s Favorite Lutheran.  Please advise!

“God will not suffer man to have the knowledge of things to come; for if he had prescience
of his prosperity he would be careless; and understanding of his adversity he would be senseless.”

You are Augustine!

You love to study tough issues and don’t mind it if you lose sleep over them.
Everyone loves you and wants to talk to you and hear your views, you even get things like “nice debating
with you.” Yep, you are super smart, even if you are still trying to figure it all out. You’re also
very honest, something people admire, even when you do stupid things.

What theologian are you?

  1. Augustine is not a bad theologian to be in this quiz. You forget, Luther was an Augustinian monk and he was quite heavilly influenced by the writings of Augustine.

  2. I too am Augustine. And I guess I would take that as a complement. He truly was one of the greatest Christian theologians of all time.

In taking that quiz I got the feeling that it dealt more with individuals’ personality types than their beliefs. Having read a fair amount about Luther over the years, I see his personality characteristics in a lot of my “German” side of the family. He was very opinionated, forceful, pragmatic (always speaking to the issue at hand), and a great negotiator. He was a great “people” person, could curse with the best of them, and knew how to appreciate great quantities of good German beer. He was exactly the type of person that was needed for God to reform the overly corrupt church of his day.

I have too much “mild, melancholy” Swedish blood to have a disposition like Luther.

Theresa, it would be fun to write a similar quiz that actually tried to approximate belief structures instead of personality types. Another project for your spare time. :) Thanks for the link, it was fun.

  3. Oh my gosh, I came out as Martin Luther!! I, who was raised Methodist (mostly, with some Independent thrown in before I attended a Baptist college….during which time I attended a evangelical Methodist inner city church… and now I’ve Evangelical Covenant).

I agree with most of Luther’s theology (except the part where he wanted to throw out the book of James), but I’m not sure about his personality…I’m not really the rebellious type, and he had to have a pretty strong personality to nail those theses to the Wittenberg Door, not to mention forsake his monkhood and marry a nun….

I like John Wesley! There’s nothing I’d like more than to sit and have a cup of tea with Susannah Wesley and sing the hymns of Charles and John. “A Mighty Fortress…” oh wait, that’s Luther. How about “Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing…” there, that’s better! “Hark the Herald!”
